No one is safe from the wrath of nature. We don’t mean to scare you but in case of a calamity, you need to be prepared in order to face it. When there are torrential rains, you should be able to stop flood water from entering your home.
How do we do that?
Make the soil slope away from your home’s foundation
This is an effective way to stop flood water from entering your home. When you make the soil slope away from your home, it does not allow for rainwater to collect anywhere near your house or around the house. The water will either seep into the soil or flow downward and away from the home. A grade of 3 meters for every 150 millimeters of rise should help rain water flow away from your home. Don’t forget to fill land and slope soil under the decks and porches too.
Anchor down and raise outdoor equipment level
It is necessary to raise the level of equipment kept outside so that it does not get damaged. Also, the reason why the equipment needs to be anchored is because it can be easily dragged away in the water or damaged due to the occurring flood. Unanchored fuel tanks can break free, and severed supply lines will contaminate surrounding ground. Hence, fuel tanks, air-conditioning units and generators should be anchored and raised above flood level.
Rain water harvesting
Set up a downspout where you can get the rainwater to flow into a rain barrel. This way you can prevent the water from going waste and simply flooding your yard and use it in a productive manner. You can use this water and reduce the cost of watering shrubs, flowers and vegetables.
Clean eavestroughs, roof gutters, downspouts
Why is this important? If you don’t clean and maintain them, water can find its way into your house. If the above mentioned ways of drainage are clogged, leaking or they don’t carry water far enough from your house. Remember to clean downspouts and eavestroughs in the fall and spring. As an effective measure of flood control, use downspout extensions to carry water far away from your foundation.
Sump pump flood control
This is an effective form of flood control when the landscape ensures that your basement gets flooded. Sump pumps work by digging a shallow pit in the basement after which a small pump is placed inside. As and when water collects in the respective area, it is pumped out through a tube that leads outside the home. Keep in mind different sump pumps come with varying power capacity. Choose one carefully so that it can generate enough power to get the job done.
While trying to stop flood water from entering your home, as a precautionary measure ensure you shut off electricity at the breaker panel in case of heavy rains and flooding. Elevate major appliances onto concrete blocks if they are potentially in harm’s way..
Contact a professional plumbing agency so that you can get the necessary fixtures and adjustments done pertaining to plumbing so you can reduce flooding and eventually, the damage incurred by the flood and rain.
